Meeting Minutes:
Chuck Cooper introduced Michelle Crim; PSU's new Sustainability
Coordinator, Facilities Dept.
Michelle defined "sustainability" and how it is interelated with
Environmental, Social, and Economic conditions. Safety is major
component and is a condition that is part of the overall scope of the
duties/responsibility inherent in her job as sustainability coordinator
on
campus.
Interelated Issues: Recycling management, Waste stream, Efficiency
standards, Energy use/consumption, Safety, and Campus Diversity.
After Michelle's comments there was discussion about recycling efforts
and changes ahead.
Xavier Oberlander and Jeanette Palmiter introduced Robert O'Brien; PSU
Prof. of Chemistry.
Robert updated the committee on his research and work in the area of
air
quality analysis. Very impressive research and development of
patented
new technology that can test the air quality for specific amts of elements
in
a given concentration/location. Robert's data is able to give
readings
based on specific date/times and is very useful as a tool to determine
exact times/dates when air quality changes.
Discussion on uses continued for some time. Ideas about using
other
analysis in combination with Robert's equipment to better test air
quality
conditions in NH.
Reuben Torres introduced the first test results to committee on tests
conducted by Certified Environmental Consulting Inc., Thomas
Thompson. Preliminary results completed were for Fungi, Bacteria,
and
Mold. Chuck and Reuben and the results showed there to be no
abnormally high results in the analysis. Tommy Thompson will
be back
soon to conduct other tests in other locations. The committee
will be
updated when those results are in.
Discussion continued on how to combine Robert's new technology with
that of Tommy Thompson's equipment. While Tommy's equipment can
detect what particular compounds/elements are it is unable to assertain
when a particular element is introduced. Robert's tests can give
a
time/date analysis.
Upon request Reuben will test dust in NH and SBII. Franzi
also
requested that the vents be tested in NH. Reuben agreed.
Some
discussion about low humidity in Basement of NH.
Discussion followed regarding sampling Questionaires/ Survey
Discussion.
Lastly, Chuck spoke on the topic of upcoming Earthquake Drills.
PSU will
need to conduct earthquake drills and Chuck is working on times/dates
which will not inconvenience students and faculty too much. "Definately
not during finals week or the beginning of the term". Chuck will
begin on
notification procedures for specific buildings.
Items 4-6 will have to be discussed at a later meeting since NH again
dominated discussion and time of this meeting.
There was further discussion about this meeting after these minutes
were posted.
Details of the discussion can be found at http://www.safetycommittee.pdx.edu/sma021402.htm
